Small Island Developing States & Tourism Webinar
The Small States Centre of Excellence, Malta is hosting a webinar on 10 September 2020 at 16.00 CET to discuss the challenges Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are facing in their tourism sectors as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Registration is free and available here.
Tourism has become the main economic activity for many SIDS, creating much-needed job opportunities and bringing in important income and foreign exchange earnings. It is often one of the few activities for which the SIDS have a strong competitive advantage because it allows them to compete in the global market. However, while SIDS offer special geographical locations and cultural heritage richness to make them unique for visitors, they are also confronted with several challenges and vulnerabilities; COVID-19 being one.
The pandemic has triggered an unprecedented disruption to travel and this has affected both tourist destinations and source markets for tourism, bringing them to a standstill. The devastating repercussions on SIDS are enormous, particularly on employment and businesses. Thus, this webinar will explore the repercussions on a local, national, and regional scale.
During the webinar, you will learn how more resilient tourism sectors can be ensured by receiving answers to the following questions:
- What deficiencies and lacunae have been brought to the fore by the pandemic on the local travel front?
- What measures have been put in place to promote traveling and safeguard both employment and economic survival?
- What alternative models of tourism has the pandemic instigated, encouraged, or brought into effect?
- What types of partnerships can be envisaged to put in place more resilient and secure touristic offerings?
Join the Small States Centre of Excellence on Thursday, September 10th at 16.00 CET for the webinar entitled SIDS & Tourism: Propelling Resilience Forward to discuss how SIDS are facing the new challenges of tourism in the post-COVID19 scenario as well as recommendations going forward.
